WebCT Tutorial

Here is a 10 minute tutorial on how my workplace uses WebCT for online learning. You can also find it at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1885674841872156869

It is mainly used for distance education and for repeating students however, this year there are a few staff that are using it a mainstream class. Next year it is proposed that all students will do at least one unit online but it yet to be decided what unit or how the students will be introduced to the use of our Learning Management System.

Have you used WebCT before? If so I would love to hear how you set it up and what tools you use.

How does WebCT differ from any other LMS you are familiar with? What are the main points of differentiation?

Do you have any suggestions on how my workplace could make better use of WebCT?

I am really interested in your comments and I am very happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hi Joanne
Very clear outline of your LMS, well explained. It seems teacher directed.
Terrific, how it is linked to assessment for students and staff and how you can track students. Big brother as you mentioned. Also great how students can get immediate feedback. We have an ability to create a similiar feature however a tenth of the detail!!! Seems teacher friendly as you mentioned which is great. Thanks Joanne

Hi Joanne, I knew that WebCT was bought out by Blackboard over a year ago now, but I didn't realise just how similar the two LMS systems appear to be. I use the Blackboard Academic Suite (enterprise edition). Like WebCT, we have different areas allocated to each course, each with it's own set of tools such as a discussion board and the ability to create/mark online tests. Each login also has a set of global tools such as student mail and the calendar. Students at my school are always going into their gradebook to check out their latest marks!

I also use Blackboard's package files, embedded files and the digital drop box? Are any of these terms/functions present in WebCT?

If you go to the OET Blackboard course > student folders > my name > class folder, you'll be able to access a PowerPoint that I used to accompany a presentation at the Asia Pacific Blacboard conference held on the Gold Coast in September. I modified the file slightly on the day, so some of the links may not work (although I think they all do on this version!), but it will give you a really good idea of how I use a similar LMS to WebCT.

A suggestion for your workplace to improve it's use of WebCT is perhaps try and move from, as you say, an 'online textbook'. Try and increase the level of student interactivity within WebCT. This could be from the incorporation of digital learning objects and/or the use of inbuilt WebCT tools such as online quizzes. Anyway, my PowerPoint in the OET Blackboard course may offer you more insight here (although not as flash as your video tutorial. Thanks, by the way!)
